I always thought that Special Needs Planning was complicated, required a lot of expertise, and was something that would require a lot of time and effort to learn. I was wrong. Though you do want to work with a good attorney to help with things like trusts and wills, helping a family with a special needs child is not as difficult as one might think.
I have recently come to realize that many families with special needs children have not done proper planning. One reason for that is there are not many advisors out there talking about the issues they face. My guess is that most Financial Service advisers don’t know where to start. Research shows that 92% of Special Needs Trusts are funded with a second to die policy. This is because as long as one parent is alive, the child will be cared for. The trust is important because any assets left in the child’s name that exceed $2,000 will exclude them from the expensive health care benefits the government provides. Any asset left in the trust does not count against this $2,000.
